Senator Mitch McConnel Industrial Hemp Farming Act Introduced into Farm Bill 2018

On Friday, June 8th 2018, Majority Leader Senator Mitch McConnel was able to successfully introduce the Industrial Hemp Farming Act of 2018. The bill was officially introduced into legislation and put into official consideration on June 13th, 2018 on Wednesday.

It was in April of 2018 that Senator Mitch McConnel, Ron Wyden, Rand Paul, and Jeff Merkley introduced the bipartisan measure with for industrial hemp farming, and since then has gained the support of an additional 24 senators. A very timely and complementary development for the hemp industry is that earlier this week, Senators cheered upon the passage of their bipartisan resolution to designate June 4th – June 10th Hemp History Week!

What is the Hemp Farming Act of 2018?

The Hemp Farming Act legalizes hemp as an agricultural commodity by removing it from the list of controlled substances. It also will give states the ability to become primary regulators of hemp production, allows hemp researchers federal grants from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, and gives hemp farmers eligibility for Crop Insurance on their hemp.

The Hemp Farming Act of 2018 builds upon the Hemp Farming Act of 2014, which included a plan for Hemp Pilot Programs, which was secured by Senator Mitch McConnel.

What happens next for the Hemp Farming Act?

The Senate Farm Bill must now be approved by the full committee. Following approval, it will go to the Senate Floor for consideration. Congressman James Comer is the leading voice on the issue in the House of Representatives.
